I'm currently reading "Revolutionary Wealth" by Alvin and Heidi Toffler, it made think a lot and really opened my mind and eyes to the changes the world around me is undergoing.
I can't say I understand 50% of there ideas, but even less then that is enough to make this book amazing and me thinking... :-)
So I thought of flat organizations, and these are some ideas I came up with:
1) An organization is flatness can be measured by the ability of the lowest rank in the organization or outside it to communicate with the highest level, through minimum filters.
Example:
A citizen's ability to communicate with the president.
The ability of a bank teller to communicate with the bank president.
2) Decentralization many communication paths ensure that there are less critical junctions thus making the organization stronger.
Think of your centralist boss, and how things would work better and faster if he only let go a bit.
3) Openness, listening and communication between all levels.
Feed back my lower levels.
4) Ideas and initiatives by workers no matter there rank to be implemented.
It possible that an idea by John from the mail room will be executed?
5) Change and mix work groups to mix ideas and thinking patterns, bring in customers to talk to your thinking groups.
6) Create an environment where everyone is in listening mode and not criticism mode.
7) What are the salary differences between the highest and lowest salary?
Will making this difference smaller make your organization betrer?
I must say that I'm no expert and never ran a business, these are ideas I thought of while reading.
I'd be happy to hear some feedback and opinions about them, if you can contribute more ideas or elaborate on others, I'd be glad to hear.
